Running out to the Gallery, new things are happening, will you be there?

ART FRESH 2013 – The new crop of artists to look out for

The number of artists who this year responded to the call for artists to participate in the ART FRESH exhibition at the Mutual Gallery shows that there is a real hunger for young artists to produce and show their work.

This first exhibition on the 2013 calendar of the Mutual Gallery, ART FRESH, which opens on Thursday 21 March at 7.00 pm features fourteen artists. Ten are graduates from the EdnaManleyCollege for the Visual and Performing Arts or colleges in the United States and four are self-taught artists. Viewers can expect a special treat on opening night.

The subjects are as varied as the output from the artists. Corey Breneisen’s serene minimalist paintings contrast with Sashawana Buckland and Nicholas Rose’s more complex compositions and Esther Chin’s warm renderings with dried leaves.  Shediene Fletcher also uses natural fibre in her collage painting and the sole sculpture in the exhibition.

The high standard of these abstract painters parallels the output of the more realistic artists. Jermaine Morgan’s colour portrait, Leo Rhule’s charcoal drawings, Cavel Johnson’s social commentaries, Stacy-Ann Hyde’s compositions, the realistic paintings of the three self-taught artists Aundre France, Christopher James and Rohan Cargill and the work of two photographers Amanda Gibson and Marc Thomas complete this year’s selection. Renowned artist Carol Crichton, the Visual Arts Director at the EdnaManleyCollege for the Visual and Performing Arts Miriam Hinds who is also an artist in her own right and Gilou Bauer, director and curator of the Mutual Gallery were this year’s judges.

The exhibition is staged in conjunction with national Commercial Bank, Carreras Group, Super Plus Food Stores, Ideal Portfolio Services, RBC Royal Bank, JN General Insurance, BCIC, Island Mist, Kool 97 FM and Wray and Nephew. The exhibition continues until 7 April 2012. Gallery hours are Mon-Fri from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 10.30 am to 3 pm. The public is welcome on opening night and throughout the duration of the exhibition.
